Marie

The most meaningful way to support my family has been learning about and advocating for our rights.

Marie and her husband came to the US almost 20 years ago. Their daughters joined them a few years later. Marie has worked as a domestic worker, but when her pandemic miracle baby was born, her old employer would not rehire her. She knows the low wages and long hours that domestic workers face and sees the toll it takes on her husband.

Denise

My motivation for me to keep going is my daughter.

Denise has worked as a nanny and home care worker for the past 4 years, and is a leader with NDWA’s We Dream in Black chapter in New York City. As a single mother, she is immensely proud of her daughter for attending (and soon graduating) college. Her daughter is very proud of Denise and her work.

Lydia

It’s my kids who keep me going. I have to be strong for them.

Lydia lost her homecare job and all her income during COVID. The family was not eligible for federal stimulus checks. They worried that they wouldn’t be able to pay their mortgage. Because of her immigration status, Lydia was unable to find work for 6 months. She is now working again, but only from 8am-1pm; a significant cut in her hours, and therefore her income. The family is still struggling financially.

Laura

I’ve been a nanny all my life and the truth is, I like it more than any other job I’ve had.

Laura been a nanny in Seattle, Washington for 17 years. She is passionate about her job and the kids that she cares for. She enjoys seeing children develop, and even teaches them Spanish. In Seattle, Laura lives with her husband, who works in another state in the Merchant Marines, and her 13 year-old son.

Ms. Kay

I am proud to be a domestic worker. I would love to be recognized for all the world to see.

Ms. Kay comes from a long line of domestic workers and is proud to continue that legacy. She started homecare work professionally when she moved to Georgia after seeing how many people were in need of care. She is a proud mother and grandmother.
